They often have a hard time understanding the meaning and purpose of body language, spoken and written words, and may interpret words literally or not understand them at all. People with ASD experience difficulties with both verbal and non-verbal communication. ASD is considered a developmental disorder as the symptoms are commonly associated with early childhood. Rather than having separate diagnoses, autism is now diagnosed in terms of its severity, ranking 1-3, where 1 requires support, 2 requires substantial support, and 3 requires very substantial support. The previous subdivisions of autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) are now considered as autism spectrum disorders. The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) now provides a single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is based on deficits in social interactions, including difficulty communicating with others, fixated interactions, and repetitive behaviours.
